For 20 years Anthony Andreotolla has lived in darkness because of a degenerative eye disease. The Massachusetts man started losing his vision as a teenager and by his thirties, he couldnât see anything. But thanks to technology, heâs got some sight back.
Andreotolla is one of the first people to get a bionic eye and wears special glasses that have a tiny camera that sends images to a wearable computer, and those are processed and sent wirelessly to the implant in his eye. âItâs not actual vision,â he explains. âItâs what they call artificial vision.â
He says he sees everything in flashes, lights, and shapes and that his vision is cloudy and black and white. But this incredible technology has given him hope again. âOnce I lost my sight, I was resigned to be blind for the rest of my life,â Andreotolla explains. âIâm not resigned to that anymore. I believe if I can live long enough, Iâll be able to see a lot of beautiful things.â
